Underlayment is required for any installation of laminate flooring or engineered solid wood flooring. The underlayment is placed over the sub-floor first then the flooring is installed on top of the underlayment.
The function of underlayment is used to lessen the affects of some of small imperfections( i.e. uneven surface, etc) in the sub-floor; to help absorb overhead sound in rooms below the flooring when walking on the floor and to slightly soften the feel when walking on the floor.
Underlayment is generally made of foam(EPE, VA, XPE, etc), foam/film combination. |
